Why do student workers now have a separate account?

Due to recent security requirements and enhancements, students employed by the university were given separate accounts to conduct university business.



I was recently hired as a student worker. How do I set up my student worker account?

  • If you have not received an activation email or no longer have access to that personal email address, you can:
    * Visit the IT Service Center with your Stormcard and your password can be reset.
    * Submit a request. Submit a ticket: St. John's University Service Desk.

How do I know what my student worker email address is?

This new account's user ID and email will be your first and last name, with a “SW” appended to the front (i.e., sw.FirstName.LastName##@stjohns.edu).

I am having issues logging back into my student worker account. What should I do?

The student worker account format is sw.FirstName.LastName##@stjohns.edu. This account DOES NOT use my.stjohns.edu


When should I use my student worker account?

Your student worker account should be used when you are representing the university as an employee.

Common times in which you should be using your student worker account:

  • Sending email communication at work

  • Submitting your timesheet

  • Accessing share drives

  • Teams communication with your department

What happens to my account if I am no longer employed as a student worker?

Once you are no longer listed as a student worker, your student worker account will become deactivated as of your last day of employment. Any personal or academic items should not be saved to the student worker account.



I am a graduate assistant. Do I have a separate account?

As a graduate assistant, you will not have access to a separate email address, as you are working as academic support to faculty or departments while also gaining experience in your field of study.

When logged into my student worker account, I do not have access to some features that I need to complete my work.

If there are certain apps within signon.stjohns.edu that you are not able to access through your Student Worker account, your Supervisor would need to submit a request to have the apps applied to your student worker account.

    1. Do not share sensitive or confidential information via email unless necessary.

    2. Use encryption for emails containing sensitive information.

    3. Be cautious of phishing attempts and report any suspicious emails.

  3. Appropriate Content:

    1. Avoid sending personal emails from your SW Account.

    2. Do not send or forward chain emails, jokes, or non-work-related content.

    3. Ensure that attachments are work-related and virus-free.

  4. Email Management:

    1. Regularly check and respond to emails in a timely manner.

  5. Legal Compliance:

    1. Adhere to all company policies and legal regulations regarding email use.

    2. Do not use your business email for illegal or unauthorized purposes.
