The iPad Edition of "LockDown Browser" available from the Apple App Store enables a student to use an iPad to take exams that require LockDown Browser. However, your instructor must first select a setting that permits the use of iPads for the exam and your school's learning management system must be compatible. The LockDown Browser iPad app is not compatible with Sakai LMS servers. All Sakai users will need to use a computer with a compatible operating system. More details can be seen here.
A student should follow these steps to take an exam with the iPad Edition of LockDown Browser if their professor used a NEW QUIZ. Your professor should be able to tell you which type of Quiz it is based on their view of the following:
Download and install the "LockDown Browser" app from the Apple App Store to the iPad. (Requires iPadOS 12 or higher.)
Launch the LockDown Browser app.
Note: The first time the app is used, you will be prompted to set it up. Click “Setup” (shown below), then select your institution (St. John’s University) and server (Canvas Prod). If you later need to change the institution or server, select the settings icon on the toolbar for the LockDown Browser app.
Once the setup is complete, you will be directed to your institution's login page. Log in with your credentials.
You should now be looking at the St. John’s Canvas page from inside the Respondus LockDown Browser app.
Open your Course either from the Dashboard or by going to your Courses list.
Locate your Quiz but DO NOT open the quiz.
Close the app (do not force quit) and launch your preferred Web Browser app on your iPad. Please note that Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox are the recommended browsers for Canvas and Respondus LockDown Browser. DO NOT use the Canvas Student app for this.
In your web browser app, navigate to Canvas (St. John's University - Sign In → Canvas LMS tile) and navigate to your New Quizzes quiz the same way as above. This time, click on the Quiz link.
Tap on “Click to Launch Assessment.”
If asked “Open in ‘LockDown’?” select “Open.”
This should now re-open the Respondus LockDown Browser app on your iPad. When asked to “Confirm App Self-Lock,” click “Yes.”
You can now click to open the appropriate Quiz on the page and click “Begin.”
Take the Quiz and tap on “Submit” when finished. Once you have received confirmation that your response was submitted, you can tap “Exit,” at which point LockDown Browser will give you back control of your iPad.
